CANDELARIA
Candelaria is a small ghost town steeped in history from the Mexican Revolution to modern era. It is located 48 miles NW of Presidio, TX, where the paved highway ends and the adventure begins. It has a population of appx. 70 persons, dozens of unique adobe structures, a historic Catholic church, abandoned schoolhouse, an old general store and saloon, goatherds, corrals, friendly residents, and a large State-protected wetlands area that is abundant in birds and waterfowl, an oasis in the desert. Once frequented by banditos such as Chico Cano and Pancho Villa, it still has the remains of structures built as a US Cavalry post.
